The "marlin" is a large game fish.
It has an elongated body, a spearlike
snout, and a long rigid dorsal fin which extends forward to form a crest. Marlin
are fast swimmers, living in many of the world's oceans and nothing beats the
excitement in the cockpit when one of these guys shows up in the spread!
One of the largest billfish species, and most coveted here in Bermuda is the Atlantic
Blue Marlin, Makaira nigricans. Men and women come from all over the
world from late May through September with the specific goal of
hooking one of these beauties! "Granders" (1000lbs+) are not uncommon in local waters, so
why not try your luck at adding your name to the record books with us!
The smaller
Atlantic White Marlin, Tetrapturus albidus, is also
found in Bermuda waters during the summer months, and while not
eliciting quite the same excitement as its larger relative, it'll
still get your blood pumping while reelin' it in!
In order to promote
Billfish Conservation
efforts, most marlin are released after being brought to the
boat. Tournament fish that are record quality are taken and
weighed on shore before being
registered with the IGFA.
